Biotechnology is an multi-disciplinary field of science and technology, which covers the research, production and use of: DNA/RNA, proteins/enzymes, microorganisms, cell cultures in the processes of: genetic modification, biosynthesis, biotransformation, bioutilisation, as well as in the isolating and modifying of the bioproducts obtained in this manner. Biotechnological processes are used to produce medicine (beginning with antibiotics and vaccines) and food (beginning with fermented products), in the chemical and mining industries (e.g. uranium refining), in the production of energy carriers (ethanol) and environmental protection. Biotechnology graduates have the knowledge and skills necessary to take up jobs in industry, research, inspection and analytical laboratories in the field of biotechnology, which is the integrated use of biochemistry, microbiology and engineering sciences for the purpose of the industrial use of microorganisms, tissue cultures and their structural elements.
